Six Creative Ways to Use Cantilever Racking

Cantilever racking is a versatile and fully customizable warehouse and retail hardware storage solution designed to store large and bulky items. Lumber, large pipes, sheet metal, gypsum board and doors are some of the larger products that are often stored using versatile and custom cantilever racking systems. Depending on the size, layout and storage requirements of your facility, industrial cantilever racking can provide the proper productivity, security and space-saving solution you need.

Cantilever racking is available for the following warehouse, logistics and retail storage applications.

Custom cantilever racking to sustain your inventory

Making customizations would be the optimal solution to ensure you get the right cantilever racking system for your warehouse or storage facility. Start by taking stock of the types of inventory you carry most often. Open cantilever racking systems provide easy access to products from all angles and help warehouse managers keep track of inventory types and levels because visibility is better.

Single cantilever racking can be installed along the back wall to preserve space in the center of the warehouse. Double cantilever racking enables items to be stored on both sides to maximize space and storage capacity.

Add wire decks for high density storage

Wire decking further increases the storage capacity of cantilever racking systems by allowing you to store small, medium and large pallets. In fact, wire decking enhances the durability and load capacity of your cantilever racking system, so you can combine pallets and box loads on the same unit without overloading.
Use cantilevered racking with particle board decking for lightweight inventory

Attaching particle board to the arms and columns of a cantilevered racking system can increase the overall storage capacity of your facility. Lightweight items, such as longhorn beads, nets, lattice fencing, skirting, etc., can be stored on particleboard decking. Particleboard decking has a load capacity range of approximately 650 to 1,000 pounds, which means it is capable of storing large amounts of lightweight building materials.

Using cantilevered racks to store heavy materials

One of the most versatile and durable racking systems used in storage facilities, cantilever racking can also be equipped for storing heavy materials such as steel beams, pipe and tubing. With an average load capacity of approximately 3,000 pounds per section, steel deck additions are capable of storing heavy pallets, loose and boxed lengthy building materials. To prevent loose round items from rolling off the sides of the racking units, the steel decking also features a waterfall lip that curves upward to hold them in place. This is an additional safety measure necessary to prevent injuries in the workplace.

The number of arms required to support the load capacity of each deck section depends on the weight of the stock, the width of the rack and the load capacity of the arms.

Using cantilevered racks with rails and hangers

Horizontal rails can be attached to cantilevered racking systems as hangers for lighter or smaller items such as clothing. The racks can be adjusted to the size and weight of the inventory. To prevent damage and injury, heavier items should be stored at the bottom or bottom of the rack and lighter items should be stored in the middle or at the top.

Arms can be repositioned or moved up or down approximately 3 inches in each direction as needed to increase or decrease space capacity depending on the width of the item. Longer arms that protrude outward have more load capacity than shorter arms, so it is important to choose the right length to fit your storage requirements.

Use cantilever racks to hold items in place

Since cantilever racking primarily stores long round or tubular building products and construction materials, it is important to secure these items in place to prevent damage and workplace injuries. Mesh cabling installed at the rear of the cantilever racking system prevents inventory from falling off the rear of the rack and secures it in place. At the same time, retaining tubes on the sides of the racks hold the material in place within the storage unit.

Adding these mechanisms to ensure that inventory is in place helps reduce the risk of injury to on-the-job workers and the risk of causing damage to property and product. In the long run, these additional safety measures can save you significant money and reduce your company's liability.
