In manufacturing, MOQ stands for Minimum Order Quantity. It refers to the smallest number of units that a manufacturer is willing to produce or sell in one order. MOQs help suppliers cover their production costs and ensure the order is profitable. This concept is especially important in industries like shelving manufacturing, where production involves specific materials, molds, machines, and labor.

For example, if you are sourcing chrome shelving units from a factory, the supplier might set an MOQ of 100 sets. This is because producing fewer than 100 sets may not be cost-effective. The factory needs to purchase raw materials like steel, chrome plating chemicals, and packaging supplies in bulk. They also need to set up machines, hire workers, and spend time assembling and inspecting the products. All of these activities have fixed costs, and a larger order helps distribute those costs across more units.

Let’s say a small retailer wants to order only 20 shelves. The manufacturer may either reject the order or offer a much higher price per unit. Alternatively, the retailer might be asked to combine their order with other customers (group buying) or pay a setup fee to make the smaller order acceptable.

For buyers, understanding the MOQ is important when planning inventory, budgeting, and choosing a supplier. A high MOQ might not be suitable for small businesses, while a low MOQ usually offers more flexibility but may come with a higher unit cost.
