What is push-back pallet racking?

Push-back racking is a system of pallet racking with a depth of 2 to 10 pallets. Push-back racking utilizes a mobile cart system where the pallets are located on sliders. Each time the front pallet is removed, gravity rolls the remaining pallets forward and the pallets are loaded and removed from the front of the system.

This allows for easy access to stored products as the pallets will always move to the front of the system until the entire track is empty.

Push racking is ideal for storing multiple pallets of the same product, as the front pallets at each location are only accessible from the aisle. However, this type of racking allows for a much higher degree of product differentiation than comparable drives in a racking system. This is because each track is loaded and unloaded independently, allowing for different products to be stored horizontally and vertically at each location.

Push-back pallet racking is a last-in, first-out (LIFO) system, which means it is not suitable for storing perishable products.

How does push-back racking work?

In a push-back racking system, each track has a pair of angled rails. Pallets are loaded and unloaded from the carriages on the rails. Because the rails are inclined, gravity pushes the remaining pallets forward each time they are unloaded.

Each rail in a push-back system has one less pallet than the pallet storage space. Thus, in a 5 pallet deep push-back racking system, there are 4 carriages to hold the pallets and a fifth pallet is loaded directly onto the rail. This way, when the front pallet is removed, there is room for the remaining pallets to slide to the front of the system.

Since each time a pallet is removed from the system, the new pallet moves to the front of the track, it is possible to load and unload the push-back racking using a standard counterbalance forklift rather than a device with greater reach, such as a reach truck.
