How does wire mesh decking for pallet racking help companies save money?

Adding wire mesh decking to pallet racking extends the functionality of the racking system. The wire floors between the beams are a stronger, longer lasting alternative to wood panels. The mesh design also enhances airflow, which is important when keeping items that are sensitive to temperature and humidity.

On top of that, the wire mesh backing is constructed in a way that is light on the material, but strong enough to stand up to the job. Keep reading to learn about the many ways wire mesh backing can save your business money.

What is wire decking for pallet racking?

The open weave form of the mesh wire decking is made of strong metal. The deck section fits between or above the support beams of the pallet racking, depending on the model. The deck cannot and should not carry the full weight of the pallet, but it does help distribute the weight over the support beams, making storage safer.

A wire plate will catch anything that falls off the pallet and prevent spills or lost items from falling to the floor. If items fall off the pallet onto the pallet below or onto the floor without a wire mesh floor in place, they can be lost.

Key benefits that wire mesh can offer

Abrasion resistance

The construction of wire mesh is designed with durability and longevity in mind. These forms of decorative panels show very little damage over time compared to wood, which can warp or crack in extreme weather. And because wire decking lasts longer than wood decking, you will spend less money on it over time because you won't have to replace it as often. You can rest assured that this finish will easily stand up to regular and hard use.

Temperature Resistant

Wire decking is weather resistant, which is a property that is often overlooked. This can be a problem with wood (especially in wet areas) as it can cause the deck to warp and require replacement. When you compare it to wire decking and its metal construction, you see a clear advantage in terms of functionality and longevity.

Simple to install

Among the best aspects of wire mesh decking is the ease of installation. Unlike wood, there is no cutting, sanding or any other type of fabrication required. This is because, in most cases, the decking is pre-cut from the factory, which means you don't have to waste time and money putting the shelves together like you would with wood.

Much lower expense

In the long run, wire rack decking costs much less.  With wood, you have to consider the cost of cutting, installing and eventually replacing the wood. This is always more expensive than the upfront cost of simple installation and wire decking.

Types of Wire Mesh Decks

Recessed flushing

As the name implies, the flush decking is aligned with the surface of the beam. It snaps into place and is supported by the base of the stepped beam. Flush flush flooring is best suited for shelves that require close access to the front of the beam. When workers attach bar codes to the beams for scanning while pulling merchandise, the recessed floor has no cables blocking the bar codes, allowing for clean scanning.

Waterfall Mesh

The form of overhang that the mesh creates above the edge of the support beam gives the deck its name - the waterfall wire mesh deck. This type of deck is mounted on top of the beams and can accommodate box and step beams. Because of its ability to accommodate many types of beams, waterfall wire mesh decking is a popular choice. If covering the front of the rack with the edges of a waterfall deck is not a problem, then this decking option is sufficient.

Flared Channel

A flared channel design is used, where the support channels on the flared deck flare outward at the end. This design allows the deck to be used with box beams or step beams, although not all types of decks are compatible. The flared opening is located below the edge of the waterfall, ensuring that the end of the channel remains secure. This design is not compatible with recessed decks because the flared end is located at the top of the front and rear beams.
